Adventure Recovery Coach Training

The Adventure Recovery Coach training provide individuals with the foundational tools and skills to integrate the “nature as healer” philosophy into the recovery coaching process. Upon completion of the AR Coach training, you will possess the necessary knowledge and skills to safely and effectively lead others on basic outdoor adventures. These include hiking, orienteering, and ceremonial activities, to name a few. AR Coaches receive ongoing supervision and education through the Adventure Recovery leadership team.

During this training, we focus on the foundational skills of navigation, risk management, interpersonal relationships, and the essential values of nature-based healing. This curriculum imparts trainees with a greater sense of self, assuredness in nature, and access to the base skills needed to support others on their journey. This training also acts as an assessment, both personal and professional, related to one’s continuum along the Adventure Recovery Coach, and if pursued, Adventure Recovery Guide track.

Evaluation

Upon completion of the Adventure Recovery Coach Training and following team review, follow-up, and assessment, individuals will be given clear directions for development and growth. Ongoing mentorship and support from senior AR Guides is part of the process. We hold relationships with our trainees every step of the way, to ensure they are clear on their needs and areas to focus on going forward, depending on the desired path.

Trainees who successfully complete the Adventure Recovery Coach training will be eligible to work with individual coaching clients through Adventure Recovery, or as independent Coaches, or within other recovery organizations. This is considered the minimum requirement for working in the field with individuals and assisting with groups.

Trainees may continue in the AR Guide Training curriculum and earn free-standing credentials as AR Rock, River, Ocean and Mountain Guides. Wilderness Advanced First Aid is the minimum backcountry medicine requirement to become an AR Guide.

Completion of each module, practice hours, and skills assessments, qualifies trainees to earn the Adventure Recovery Guide Certificate. This certificate then makes one eligible for per-diem, technical skills fieldwork with individual AR Clients and Groups. Completion of individual modules and final certificate does not guarantee employment.

What to Expect

Long days and nights are to be expected.

Cold, rain, snow, cold water immersion, steep terrain, exposed cliffs, darkness are all expected (and welcomed).

Challenging group dynamics and personal boundaries will be tested. You will be supported by the group and by the Adventure Recovery Training and Leadership Team through any exceptionally challenging moments.

We can’t wait to see you outside!

“Tim Walsh and the Adventure Recovery family are some of the kindest and most compassionate souls I have had the privilege and honor to meet on my journey. Their methods of instruction as teachers and guides are truly divinely inspired … If you are interested in learning more about their extraordinary recovery stories and uncover and rediscover a natural way to find and maintain health and wellness through outdoor adventure and wonder I highly recommend contacting them.”-Jody D.

“I am so grateful for Adventure Recovery and my AR Crew. As an AR team member, I get to do what I love each and every day. On top of that, what we do is having a direct impact on other people’s lives. This brings purpose to the day and it means a great deal to me.”- Max E., AR Guide

“AR training was such an incredible, beautiful, and very challenging experience that will be with me forever. The trainers are dedicated and passionate about what they do. It was such an amazing feeling to be around a group of people that have the same passion and love for nature and most importantly are passionate about helping others. This experience taught me so much and challenged me to step out of my comfort zone. I am grateful and feel blessed to be part of the AR family.” - Omayra P.

“I think spending time with other like-minded people has a huge impact, but this is even more powerful when we’re working together, collaborating and learning how to climb, paddle, bike, etc. The most enjoyable aspect for me personally is working with those who are truly passionate about the work. Sober living starts with a simple desire. Adventure Recovery teaches a lifelong love of sober life. This has been an incredible adventure and I feel truly blessed.” - Anthony T.

“Adventure Recovery founder, Tim Walsh, facilitates the Youth Wellness Council for ADAP in Weston, CT. He’s done so for the last seven years and is an integral part of our program’s success.  His unique approach fosters lasting connection and creates a safe environment where our kids can openly share their feelings around substance use and the underlying challenges facing teenagers and parents today. Tim’s leadership is powerful and the ongoing connection he and his team maintains with our community’s kids, parents, and facilitators is a testament to the impact of his model.”— Rob Handel, President of the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program (ADAP) of Weston, CT

Adventure Recovery: Truly Making a Difference

As we incorporate clinical therapeutic support into our roster of AR Crew resources, we are able to measure the impact of the Adventure Recovery approach through our outcomes. In the past five years, we’ve served over 1300+ different groups, impacting 4,600+ individuals through AR group programming. 1500+ clients in groups and individual Adventure Recovery coaching, guide experiences, and one-on-one mentorship. The average mentor-mentee relationship lasts over 16+ months, ensuring consistency in communication and follow-through. AR trainees often go on to work as adventure guides and expand their repertoire of outdoor skills and continue on the path to healthy living. In addition, we see amelioration of symptoms of anxiety and stress, increased feelings of self-worth, and improvement in communication and connection overall.

“Through the framework of learning and progressing in challenging and exhilarating outdoor experiences (whitewater kayaking, rock climbing, fire ceremony, etc.) I learn what it means to be vulnerable, what it means to be a beginner (and be ok with that). In addition, I learned what it means to fail, and what it means to succeed. I learn how the rhythms and forces in nature mirror those in us as humans. What’s more, there are many forces in the natural world that are a great deal more powerful than me, but I don’t have to fear those forces if I learn how to navigate them. Perhaps most importantly, however, I learned that all of this insight and self-awareness would not have been possible without a teacher to guide me, to challenge me, to reflect back to me, and at times to simply walk alongside me. The true connection nourished my spirit and offered me a sense of safety and vitality. I felt I’d come home, to myself and others.”— Josh Flaherty, AR Guide, Executive Director
