ADVENTURE RECOVERY FOR VETERANS

Military life leaves an indelible mark and civilian life can leave veterans seeking more, or perhaps struggling and in need of support. At Adventure Recovery, we are honored to serve the Veteran community by creating access to positive outdoor adventures that generate lifelong connections and encourage wellness through nature-based guiding, peer mentorship, and therapy.

If you’re a Veteran (Reservists and Guard are welcome) facing challenges with trauma, mental health struggles, PTSD, alcohol or substance-use recovery, we have dedicated teams ready to support you. AR utilizes the transformative, inspiring power of nature as a catalyst for healing. Adventure Recovery clinicians and guides assess individual aptitudes, capacity, and follow the client’s lead. As a customized model, tailored to the distinctive background and needs of the individual, the participant leads and lights the way to their own healing.

TIME OUTSIDE FOR VETERANS

Outdoor settings remove the overwhelming stimuli and pressures of daily life, replacing them with integral awareness of ancestral rhythms that foster internal grounding and capacity for mindfulness. In nature, Veterans can reconnect with themselves, experiencing reduced stress, improved mood, and a renewed sense of purpose.

Activities such as hiking, camping, climbing, or simple time outdoors creates space to rebuild confidence, self-esteem, and trust—all essential components of mental health recovery. The combination of physical activity, fresh air, and awe-inspiring landscapes promote clarity, foster resilience, and guide Veterans to rediscover connection and community in a contained setting, free from expectation or judgment.

ADVENTURE RECOVERY CLINICAL AND VETERANS

Nature-based therapy and experiences offer a profound context for Veterans coping with anxiety, depression, PTSD, and trauma. The natural environment of the wild calls soldiers into immediate presence, inhabiting the moment and quieting the ruminating mind. Through expert facilitation, guided outdoor teachings, and skills-based learning, clients expand their capacity for self-regulation.

AR ACTIVITIES FOR VETERANS

Our mission in working with Veterans is to tap into the unlimited resources available through the internal and external wilderness, in line with the core AR mission. The work is about creating and cultivating sacred space, away from the stimuli of daily civilian life, to amplify and build upon the inner tools of strength, resilience, and self-regulation. Through the outdoor activities, facilitated by skilled mentors and guides, Veterans find a new place of peace and calm, while harnessing their innate capacity. This is powerful work.

HOW ADVENTURE RECOVERY WORKS FOR VETERANS

The following list comprises samplings that the Adventure Recovery crew leads, but this particular summary is tailored to the ways in which we customize the adventure for Veteran populations.

Adventure is a profound modality for transformation and healing, specifically when it comes to working with Veterans, Reservists, and Guard.

  • HIKING & ORIENTEERING

There are countless trails to be explored and even more back country terrain areas to discover. Continue to navigate and experience the natural world and all it offers. Hiking and orienting on the trail are ancient practices, igniting our sense of interconnectedness and meaning. Rediscover the beauty and awe of hidden places, uncrowded spaces, and the healing power of being outside.

  • RAFTING & WHITEWATER

Rafting, kayaking, canoeing, SUP and even surfing are dynamic and powerful river activities that ignite personal strength, perseverance, camaraderie, and resilience. AR Guides create educational and transformative adventures for Veterans in some of the most spectacular environments, to get the most out of the journey.

  • CLIMBING & RAPPELLING

Climbing and rappelling offer dynamic, multi-faceted opportunities for presence and personal evolution. AR Veteran climbing programs focus on increasing awareness, trust, and risk management skills while applying site safety, rope skills, knots, natural anchors, mindful movement, proper equipment use, and styles of ascent and descent. These practices build upon certain military backgrounds, providing a profound context for narrative elaboration, new capacity, and growth. Rocks bring us into immediate experience of ourselves and others, called into the nuanced interplay of metaphor and practice. Rocks are where we meet ourselves.

  • SNOW & WINTER

Snow sports and winter activities keep veterans connected to the wonder of the winter season. AR winter programming options for Veterans include downhill snowboarding and skiing trips, winter hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, winter camping, and bushcraft.

  • CEREMONY & RITUAL

One of the most profound areas of the Adventure Recovery offerings are ceremony and ritual. These activities inspire a spirit of deep connection and reverence for all living things. We create space for individuals and/or groups to connect, ignite, and transform. Ancient practices and rites can include fire ceremony, mindfulness, solo expeditions, nature as healer, and the sweat lodge. The AR Ceremony and Rituals services are led by trained individuals who are skilled in all risk mitigation and ensure each experience is tailored to the desired outcomes.

AR VETERAN PROGRAM OPTIONS

Veteran programming includes half-day, daylong, multi-day, trainings, and excursions that foster exploration and learning as the context for therapeutic work outdoors.

TO VETS: As we work to implement Chapter 31 coverage for programming, we encourage individuals to sign up for potential scholarships to attend ongoing events or participate in AR trainings, including those we can tailor specifically to military populations.
